Step It Up Summer Camps (3).png

Led by a team of multi-talented artists and educators from the Montreal Steppers, our summer camps focus on storytelling using the art forms of Stepping, Drumming and Spoken Word. Camp meetings will use these art forms to explore Black History with the intention of presenting an end-of-week showcase for friends and family. Confidence building coupled with our values of Black excellence, resilience and community, are at the core of our summer programming.

Montreal Steppers is dedicated to sharing our art and our story of step for all. Yet, we aim to consider BI&POC campers as one of our primary goals is to provide a unique experience and importantly, accessibility to BI&POC communities to engage in the learning of this rich history.

Elementary, High School & University Workshops (September 2020 - June 2021)

Monochrome Photo Collage Tutorial YouTub

A stepping workshop with Montreal Steppers includes an introduction to foundational step routines. Participants will learn how to clap, stomp and chant as a team. They would learn what it meant for black folks to be steppers in the early 1900's and how their resilience changed their lives. We emphasize the importance of creating these rhythms and beats together with a focus on teamwork and character building. Each workshop includes dialogues and discussions on the history of step, its inception, the migration of Africans from Africa to North America, South America and the Caribbean. At the end of the workshop each participant would have learn at least two step routines; rhythmic music that they created with their bodies. This is always a proud moment for participants.
